Come the New Year, many people will make the same old resolutions such as eating and drinking less and getting fit and in shape. But by the end of January 2019, even if you’ve forked out to join a gym, your enthusiasm will wane, and you’ll be back to nights in watching the TV or meeting friends down the pub!
But if you’re really serious about making changes to your lifestyle, why wait until January to do so? You’ll be far better off signing up to your new lifestyle in December because then, by the time January 1st rolls around, you’ve had a whole month to test out what works and what doesn’t work.
For example, maybe a diet change isn’t working for you; or maybe you need more cardio and less strength training or vice versa. December is a great time to put your body to the test so by the New Year you’re already in the fitness groove.
Peace & Quiet
In the build up to Christmas, our lives tend to pick up the pace with parties, shopping, family visits and the general hustle and bustle of the festive frenzy. In general, due to people’s increased social commitments, December is generally quieter in most gyms. This means that you’ll not only get some peace and quiet from Christmas craziness, but you’ll also feel more comfortable when you start your training as you won’t be surrounded by hoards of practiced and experienced gym goers.
What’s more, if the gym is quiet, you’ll have the opportunity to acclimatize yourself to a new routine, before the influx of both new and existing members in January.
And if you fancy trying one of the classes run at your gym, these will generally be quieter too enabling you to get up to speed before the regulars return in January.
If you’re a newbie to the gym, then it’s always a good idea to get advice and guidance from a fitness instructor or personal trainer. They are experienced in what they do and can help you to work out the best programme to help you achieve your fitness goals.
For the same reasons that a gym tends be quieter in December, similarly the instructors and personal trainers generally find they have more time on their hands and will be in a position to dedicate more hours to helping you to get on track.
They may also offer a reduced rate for their time in December when their diaries are likely to be less full.
Most gym owners recognise that the big influx of new members is likely to be in January. So, in December these fitness facilities will often come up with some kind of special offer to entice new members. So, by joining a gym in December, you will benefit financially as well as physical.
At Vitality Health & Fitness for example, anyone who joins our gyms in Neath or Port Talbot will pay just £10 for the month (and no joining fee – saving £19.99). The full membership fee will then start in January so you literally get a month’s training for around £2 a week!

Join a Gym in December
The most important reason you should join a gym and get a feel for your fitness goals in December is that if you genuinely want to be a new version of yourself, the arrival of the New Year isn’t going to help you. If you want real change, that has to come from within. If you internalise a goal to start at a certain date or after a certain milestone, you’re setting yourself up for failure.
Putting off your fitness and health goals is an unhealthy habit to get into. If you’re planning on hitting the treadmill, bench or stair master in 2019, why wait? Do it now as your fitness journey starts today.
